The key is created in your browser and never stored by us. Save it in a password manager now – if you lose it, the account is gone. We recommend Bitwarden, a free and open-source password manager.

How the private key works

  1. Press Generate – your browser creates 256 bits of randomness with the Web Crypto CSPRNG.
  2. Press Copy and paste the key into your password manager. We only keep a SHA-256 fingerprint of it.
  3. Enter a display name and create the account.
  4. Sign in from any device by pasting the key. There is no password to leak, no reset flow, and no third party who can vouch for you.

A key is a long random string, so it is already unguessable. That is why we can store only a fast fingerprint of it – a slow password hash would add no protection here, and a stolen fingerprint cannot be used to sign in. Why this is safer than email & OAuth →
